九寨溝位于阿壩藏族羌族自治州南坪縣中南部，縱深40多公里，總面積6萬多公頃，三條主溝形成y形分布，總長達60余公里。由于交通不便，這里幾乎成了一個與世隔絕的地方。僅有九個藏族村寨坐落在這片崇山峻嶺之中，九寨溝因此得名。這里保存著具有原始風貌的自然景色，有著自己的特殊景觀。據說，在世界別的地方已經很難見到。九寨溝既是自然保護區，又是國家級風景名勝區，同時，被列入世界人類自然遺產名錄。

九寨溝的瀑布也叫人神往。這里河道縱橫，水流順著呈臺階形的河谷奔騰而下，構成數不清的瀑布。有的細水涓涓，有的急流直下，有的若玉帶飄舞，有的似銀河奔瀉。寬度或長度超過貴州黃果樹瀑布的就有六條之多，其中諾日朗瀑布，寬100米以上，高20多米，水流凌空而下，銀花四濺，水聲隆隆。樹正瀑布不寬，但高30余米，湖水分兩路猛瀉谷底，震耳欲聾。有的瀑布，呈多級下跌，崖壁上長滿繁茂青翠的樹，瀑水從林間穿流下瀉，形成罕見的"森林瀑布" 。
九寨溝動植物資源豐富，種類繁多，原始森林遍布，棲息著大熊貓等珍貴野生動物。九寨溝附近群山上生長著大片的箭竹林，是我國大熊貓的主要產地之一，被列為自然保護區。保護區里還生活著金絲猴、小熊貓等珍貴動物。
