(一)英語介紹信的定義和類型
1.介紹信的定義
通過對某人的情況介紹讓收信人對被介紹人有一定的了解，并使他們相互認識，從而解決被介紹人的一些實際問題，這樣的英語書信就是介紹信。
2.介紹信的類型
(1)正式介紹信(formal letter introduction)
正式介紹信一般是寫信人因為公事將自己本單位本部門的某人或業務關系人介紹給某單位或某個人，從而處理一些同公務有關的事宜或進行業務接洽。這種介紹信格式要求規范、嚴謹，語氣比較正式、莊重。
(2)非正式介紹信(informal letter of introduction)
這是一種個人與個人之間交流的介紹信，用以介紹朋友相互認識，介紹某人前往辦理事務，或有什么事請朋友幫忙，等等。這種介紹信一般從詞語的選用到行文都較隨意。
(二)介紹信的內容和寫作注意事項
1.介紹信的內容
(1)被介紹人的基本情況
不管由于公事還是由于私事，介紹信應首先介紹前去聯系的人的基本情況。所謂基本情況主要包括被介紹人的姓名、職務、與寫信人的關系等。
(2)介紹的原因和目的
向收信人說明被介紹人前往是為了開展什么工作，辦理什么事情，需要收信人給予哪些具體幫助或照顧等。
(3)表示謝意
預先對對方可能給予的幫助或照顧表示感謝。
2.介紹信寫作的注意事項
介紹信寫作的格式同一般書信大致相同，但一般不必寫信頭和信內地址，而只在右上角處注明寫信的時間即可。
介紹信在選詞上要客氣，請求他人幫忙不可用命令的口吻。一定要預先在文中向收信人表示感謝，做到不失禮節。
介紹信篇幅無需太長，文字要簡潔，語言要流暢。
